Updates for January and February

JANUARY 11:  McDonald's Fund Raiser!!  Any inside sales at McDonald's (not drive-thru) between 6 and 8 p.m. will earn our school money.  Please come support our teachers who will be donating their time and talents to help out during this fun fund raiser.
JANUARY 20th through 27th: Canned Food Drive----The Southern Utah University Athletics Department is teaming up with the Iron County School District to bring in more canned goods than other college athletics departments around the region.  The schools will be competing against each other to bring in the most canned foods, and each class at each school will also be competing to bring in the most canned foods!!  What a competition it will be!!  The winning class in the district will receive a PARTY----and the winning school will receive 500 tickets to a sporting event (TBA).
FEBRUARY 6th through 10th: FAMILY WEEK---more information later
FEBRUARY 27th: SPELLING BEE---make sure you are helping you child(ren) practice their words.  If you do not have a list at you house, contact your teacher(s) for a list.  Children should be familiar with the words and at least have a grasp on how to "guess" at spellings in order to be confident if chosen to compete.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!  We made our goal of gathering in 1000 Box Tops!!  Thank you all for sending them in!!

YEAH!!!  Our Walk-A-Thon pledges raised enough money for the needed technology in our classrooms!!  Thank you for your donations.

MONDAY: Each child will be given a green bracelet to wear.  Each will have numbers to be entered in a daily drawing.  Also, make sure to check each day for what color of shirt to wear the next day, as you can' t claim a prize if you aren't wearing the correct color of the day!!  Shirt colors will be announced on posters around the school, so watch for them.  Assembly at 2:30 to kick off Green Ribbon Week
TUESDAY: National Recycling Day.  Bring in all your old cell phones, used batteries, and toner cartridges to be recycled.  The class that brings in the most wins a SMOOTHIE PARTY!

THURSDAY:  Nutrition Class students from the high school will be coming to discuss nutrition with the kids.
TUESDAY - FRIDAY: WALK-A-THON during P.E. class times.  A pledge sheet came home with your child last week.  Make sure you ask friends and family to help with this fund raiser---the money raised will go toward buying technology for the classrooms (like smart boards, etc).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 WEDNESDAY, November 16th is the school's THANKSGIVING FEAST!!!

Upcoming Events to be aware of:
SPELLING BEE:  your child should have brought home a very long spelling list last week.  It has a blue note attached to the front with information about the spelling bee.  This is the second year the South Elementary has participated in this and we hope to continue, as it is a very good learning activity for the students.  PLEASE PRACTICE THE WORDS WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME, spell them out loud, write them down, use them in your day to day conversations---just help them get used to these words so that if they are chosen to be in the bee, they will feel comfortable with it.  The school level spelling bee will be held on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27th and the District Level will be held on FRIDAY, MARCH 2nd

The SCIENCE FAIR will be held on MARCH 22nd; more information to come.
