THANKS to Kay Neilson for collecting and sending in our BOX TOPS! So far, the South Elementary has received over $3000 for our BOX TOPS! Be sure to keep sending them in. Our last collection of them will be the end of March.
FEBRUARY 27th is the school SPELLING BEE!! The kids have been testing in their classrooms to find out who will be competing. There will be two participants from each class. Make sure you are practicing spelling at home with your child. Also, if parents would like their kindergartener to participate in the spelling bee, they are eligible by parent request only. Get in touch with the office.
SOUTH ELEMENTARY has been chosen as a RECYCLING PILOT SCHOOL. S.U.R.E Recycling has put together a program called the GREEN TEAM for our school. Each classroom will be given a box to collect paper throughout the day, and teachers will select students to empty that box daily into larger recycling bins in the hallways. The paper items collected will be weighed and that weight will be charted. When we have gotten to a certain weight (TBA), South Elementary will be treated to a PARTY from SURE Recycling! Send in all your used paper items: newspapers, junk mail, used copy paper, old refrigerator art, even shredded documents, any paper items, colored or white, that you don't need anymore. Recycling helps us ALL!! Let's do our best to participate in this great program!!
ARTS NIGHT is coming up on March 22nd. Students may enter visual arts or performing arts, there are no specific rules, anything goes. The performances this year will take place in several different classrooms, and the visual arts will be in the gym and possibly in other classrooms. This year's event will be an "Open House" instead of the regular scheduled shows in the gym. This will give more students the chance to participate in the performances. Ask you child what he or she plans to do for this event.
BOOK FAIR!!! SEP Week is coming up March 5th through 9th and the Book Fair will take part in that again. Note that this fair will be a fund raiser for the library and WILL NOT be a "Buy One, Get One Free". We have been offered a chance to have a third Book Fair in May right before the end of the school year which will have a bigger and better selection----and it WILL be Buy One, Get One Free!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs. Little's 5th Grade Class for winning the class with the most canned goods collected at South Elementary during the "Food Fight" event. The class that collected the most in the district was Mrs. Draper's class at Cedar Middle School, collecting 761 cans; and Iron Springs Elementary was the overall winner with 3664 cans total! South Elementary kids collected a whopping 2215 cans!! Overall, SUU collected 23,400 POUNDS of canned goods, beating last year's total of only 8900 pounds. GOOD JOB, kids!!

Also, make sure to check each day for what color of shirt to wear the next day, as you can' t claim a prize if you aren't wearing the correct color of the day!! Shirt colors will be announced on posters around the school, so watch for them. Assembly at 2:30 to kick off Green Ribbon Week
TUESDAY: National Recycling Day. Bring in all your old cell phones, used batteries, and toner cartridges to be recycled. The class that brings in the most wins a SMOOTHIE PARTY!

WEDNESDAY, November 16th is the school's THANKSGIVING FEAST!!!
Upcoming Events to be aware of:
SPELLING BEE: your child should have brought home a very long spelling list last week. It has a blue note attached to the front with information about the spelling bee. This is the second year the South Elementary has participated in this and we hope to continue, as it is a very good learning activity for the students. PLEASE PRACTICE THE WORDS WITH YOUR CHILD AT HOME, spell them out loud, write them down, use them in your day to day conversations---just help them get used to these words so that if they are chosen to be in the bee, they will feel comfortable with it. The school level spelling bee will be held on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27th and the District Level will be held on FRIDAY, MARCH 2nd.
The SCIENCE FAIR will be held on MARCH 22nd; more information to come.
